Why did you join ByteDance?
SOOJIN: I chose ByteDance to get a better understanding of the users on TikTok's platform. I was looking for a job that would create immediate impact on users. People can record moments from their everyday life using TikTok. I love that TikTok is a place for people to share their moments of happiness.
Moreover, even though ByteDance is a global tech giant, it has a startup spirit and environment. I can fully utilize my pioneer mindset, an attitude that is appreciated in this company. I feel empowered here. As long as I am fully aligned with the team's goals and the company's long term growth, my ideas can come to fruition.
THOMAS: I wanted to become a ByteDancer because I thought it would be fun. Before joining TikTok, I worked at an advertising agency, where I developed multiple commercials and planned several consumer activities. While I enjoyed the work I did for my previous job, I always wanted to lead a team and make changes to the brand side.
When did you feel most fulfilled at TikTok?
SOOJIN: With the support from various cross-functional teams, one of my recent marketing campaigns turned out really successful! This specific campaign acquired the biggest number of new users this year and TikTok ranked as the most popular app on the Korean App store during the campaign period. The moment I was most proud of, however, was when the other team members from the global marketing team asked me about the campaign to learn from it and set it as a learning benchmark for other countries. For a global company, such as ours here at TikTok, one successful case can be leveraged elsewhere and can benefit other markets and products.
What was the most challenging moment you encountered while at TikTok?
THOMAS: The first two weeks was the most challenging time of my time here at TikTok. I wasn't used to using tools, such as our in-house communication app Lark to communicate. In addition, it was my first time experiencing such a fast-paced environment. It was a new atmosphere for someone like me who spent their career at a traditional Korean company where every process was sorted by hierarchy and the reporting process was delayed due to the layers of hierarchy. It was chaotic for me initially, before I slowly became used to the efficient system at TikTok.
Describe Thomas in one word
SOOJIN: I would say.. he is resourceful. Both personally and professionally. He's someone who has the best restaurants and cool music recommendation lists. It's like he knows how to twist and jive. When in work mode, he's very creative. He brings surprising ideas to the table. When I'm stuck creatively or conceptually, I ask for his opinions. Now that I think of it, his creativity might be stemming from his widely varied personal experiences.
Describe Soojin in one word.
THOMAS: Persistent. She is very determined and persistent in reaching her objective. She bases her approach on data analysis to convince our teammates and other stakeholders. This is also why I enjoy her presentations at our team's weekly Monday meetings. When you see her wearing huge headphones in the office, that's when you should let her focus. She is in her own Soojin-Zone.
What are the things you have learnt from Thomas?
SOOJIN: He is objective. To analyze any opportunity and situation from multiple angles. These are important lessons because when I'm in the zone, I tend to focus solely on on thing. He is a calm tactician. Thomas strategizes, while I execute.
What are the things you have learnt from Soojin?
THOMAS: Her openness leads to flexibility in her work style, and her positivity motivates people to group towards a common goal. I have a tendency to focus on things and work alone when under pressure, but I learnt from her that it benefits the team when we are open towards one another while working towards a common goal.
What is something about Thomas that impressed you?
SOOJIN: He is a very efficient worker, and uses time wisely. He wouldn't work late unless it's necessary. If he needs to concentrate in a quiet workplace, he'd go into the phone booth and get it done there.
As a team leader, he knows how to motive people by providing constructive feedback. They say indifference is the epitome of evil. Thomas pays attention to team members' work morale and output. He compliments when it is due, both casually and formally. This helps our team to focus on goal and optimize work processes. As a result, it is very natural for our team to freely express one's opinion and provide feedback. I believe this is important for an individual and organization to grow.

What is something about Soojin that impressed you?
THOMAS: There was a case when we encountered roadblocks with an external partner while developing a marketing campaign together. The schedule was delayed and agreement details had to be modified. Being the project owner of that project, I knew she was under a lot of stress, but never once complained about the situation, but instead shouldered the responsibility, and the campaign she led resulted in one of the best campaigns the team has pushed out.
What would be your advice to potential ByteDancers out there? What are some of the characteristics the TikTok Marketing team is looking for?
SOOJIN: The key is to be self-driven. I am given ownership to lead and design my role. If self-driven is the perfect word to describe you, don't hesitate to create your own adventure at ByteDance.
THOMAS: You have to have a mindset of an entrepreneur. Consider ByteDance as your own company, consider the budget as your own money. This will change the way in which you make decisions.
